Plan Ahead
Develop a plan for you and your family. Identify a safe area, such as a basement or storm shelter, and decide now what you’ll do if there’s an extended power outage. Be sure to contact family, friends, and neighbors with young children, who are elderly, or have medical conditions, to ensure they also have a plan.
Make an Emergency Kit
Get ahead of storms by putting together an emergency preparedness kit that includes (at minimum) non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, a battery-powered radio or television, a portable cell phone charging bank, a blanket or sleeping bag, a first aid kit, and any necessary medications.
Keep a Watch
Check for roof leaks, window leaks, or cracks in the foundation to maintain a moisture barrier. Clear branches and trim trees, check gutters and drains for blockages, secure outdoor furniture, and ensure fences and outdoor structures are secure.
Stay Connected
Report any hazards and damage to poles and wires, electric meters, wires between the transformer and the weather head, power outages, trees falling, etc., by going to the Report an Outage page, or give us a call. Also, be sure to check in with local TV or radio stations. For updates, you can go to the Power Outages page.
